Mark Kermode once asked David Simon (creator of The Wire) what he thought about critics who said the tv show alienated the average viewer by not explaining everything in dumbed down detail; Simon replied succinctly: "Fuck the Average Viewer". A great response: visceral, punk rock & summing up the whole argument over the dumbing down of our culture. Let's face it, what did pandering to the average viewer ever achieve?
